Mills in Altoaragón - harinero

Escalona

Escalona is on the road from L'Ainsa towards Bielsa and the French border. The mill is alongside the road in a curve not far north of Labuerda: the mill is in fact closer to this village than to Escalona.

An indication on an old army map led us towards this inconspicious construction. At the time of our visit the ground-floor was empty and very clean. There was nothing that reminded of the past activities. (I didn't enter the upper floor, though).

Outside the building we found broad canals with locks everything very well maintained because they are still part of the irrigation system.

It is really interesting to read Pallaruelo about the old practise of taking possession. It all happened in 1609 when one of the richest people in Altoaragón, Ramón de Mur, barón de Pallaruelo, came down to the mill accompanied from a notary and the necessary documents to prove his rights. Once there

He opens the doors and the windows. He then took some water from the canal to spoil it on the ground. After that he let the water move the rueda by opening the valve (tajadera) and closing it almost immediately.
With this actions he secured his rights and was ready to move to the next village in his dominion. Which in this case was Puyarruego.
